Week 4: Stanford Runs to Pre-Nationals Win, No. 2 Ranking in Men’s D-I Poll

Stanford Cardinals logoUSTFCCCA: The Stanford Cardinals, running in the men’s 8-kilometer Pre-National White Race, picked up the team championship and improved eight spots in this week’s men’s Division I cross country poll to No. 2 behind top-ranked Oregon.

Oregon received eight of the 12 first-place votes with third-ranked Oklahoma State receiving the other four first-place votes as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the men’s top 30 on Tuesday.

Stanford easily outdistanced seventh-ranked Iona on Saturday as the Cardinal scored 77 points to Iona’s 123 in the White Race. The Cardinal were led by senior Garrett Heath who finished third with a time of 23:36.4.

Oregon ran a small squad in the Mike Hodges Invitational winning the event with a perfect 15 points. Oklahoma State was in action in Terre Haute running in the open race. The Cowboys finished one-two-three in the open race with freshman German Fernandez leading the way for Oklahoma State.

The Portland Pilots remained fourth this week in the poll following their fourth-place run at the Mike Hodges Invitational. Moving up one spot to No. 5 is Alabama. The Crimson Tide won Saturday’s Pre-National Blue Race beating ten other top 30 teams. Alabama was led by Blue Race overall winner Tyson David, who crossed the finish line in 23 minutes, 30.10 seconds.

Wisconsin is ranked sixth followed by Iona at No. 7. Northern Arizona moves up eight spots to No. 8 with Michigan (No. 9) and Georgetown (No. 10) completing the men’s top ten. NAU finished second overall in the Pre-Nationals Blue Race team standings. The Lumberjacks were led by sophomore David McNeill who finished second overall to Alabama’s David in the Blue Race individual standings.

UCLA made a big jump this week. The Bruins improved ten spots from No. 23 to No. 13 following a fifth-place finish in the Pre-Nationals White Race.

No. 19 Indiana, No. 24 Washington, and No. 28 Florida each made their debut in the men’s poll this week. The Hoosiers, who have hovered near the top 30 for the past several weeks, finally broke through following an eighth-place finish in the Pre-Nationals White Race. Washington and Florida were close behind the Hoosiers as the Huskies and Gators finished 11th and 12th respectively in the men’s White Race.

The voting panel for the USTFCCCA Division I Men’s National Poll consists of the elected executive committee and regional representatives of the USTFCCCA and is conducted by Don Kopriva.
