On Day 5, Team USA steps it up and earns more medals at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
DAWN HARPER WINS GOLD MEDAL IN WOMEN’S 100M HURDLES
Team USA’s Dawn Harper dominated the field in the women’s 100m hurdles race, finishing in 12.54 seconds. Behind her, Australia’s Sally McLellan earned the silver medal, finishing in 12.64 seconds. The bronze medal went to Priscilla Lopes-Schliep of Canada, who also finished in 12.64 seconds. Team USA’s Damu Cherry finished in 4th place (12.65 seconds).
Lolo Jones, a favorite to win the race, unfortunately did not have her race in Beijing. Jones finished in a disappointing 7th place (12.72 seconds) after a slow start and then hitting the 9th hurdle.
RICHARDS EARNS BRONZE MEDAL IN WOMEN’S 400M FINAL
Team USA’s Sanya Richards won the bronze medal in the women’s 400m final, finishing in 49.93 seconds. Ahead of Richards were Christine Ohuruogu (GBR) and Shericka Williams (JAM), who finished in 1st and 2nd places respectively. Ohuruogu won the race in 49.62 seconds, and Williams finished in 49.69 seconds–a personal best.
Richards, despite finishing in one of the top 3 spots, thought that the gold medal was a tangible goal. “I knew that gold was mine. I knew I was going to run 48 seconds. I felt so good,” said Richards. “I was already getting elated coming off the turn because I knew how my races had been going. My hamstring just really let me down. I just feel like I’ve worked so hard in vain.”
