Team USA is still yet to earn a gold medal after several disappointing races on Day 2 of the Track & Field events at the 2008 Olympic Games.
DIX EARNS BRONZE IN GAY-LESS 100M FINAL
In the afternoon session of the Track & Field events, the men’s semifinal and final races of the 100m event were underway. Unfortunately Tyson Gay finished 5th in the second heat of the semifinals and was unable to advance to the finals. Gay ran the semifinal race in 10.05 seconds, but failed to qualify. Walter Dix (2nd in heat 1, 9.95 seconds) and Darvis Patton (4th in heat 2, 10.03 seconds) were the only two Americans to advance to the finals.
In the final, Jamaica’s Usain Bolt won the gold medal and improved upon his world record (previously 9.72 seconds), finishing in 9.69 seconds without the aid of wind. Richard Thompson of Trinidad-Tobago earned silver, finishing in 9.89 seconds. Team USA’s Walter Dix earned the bronze and a personal best time, finishing in 9.91 seconds.
CAMARENA AND CARTER MAKE SHOT PUT FINAL, BUT FALL SHORT OF MEDAL HOPES
Team USA gained some ground when Jillian Camarena and Michelle Carter qualified for the final competition in the women’s shot put, but failed to crack the top 3 and take home a medal. Camarena and Carter’s performances in the final were good for 12th and 15th place, respectively.
BARRINGER AND WILLARD TO COMPETE IN STEEPLECHASE FINAL
American record holder Jenny Barringer and Anna Willard both qualified for the final of the women’s 3000m steeplechase on day 1. Barringer was third in her heat with 9:29.20, and Willard finished in 9:28.52 in the last heat. Both women will contend in Sunday’s final at 9:30 a.m. (9:30 p.m. EDT).
