The current points standings in men’s field events (best five competitions totaled)…
High Jump
1. Stefan Holm, SWE, 73
2. Yaroslav Rybakov, RUS, 64.5
3. Andrey Silnov, RUS, 62.5
4. Ivan Ukhov, RUS, 51
4. Jesse Williams, USA, 51
6. Andra Manson, USA, 48
7. Dusty Jonas, USA, 38
8. Jamie Nieto, USA, 37.5
9. Kyriakos Ioannou, CYP, 30
9. Linus Thörnblad, SWE, 30
With four in the top ten, the biggest recent competition was the US Olympic Trials, where Jesse Williams triumphed, Andra Manson tied for second, and Dusty Jonas bombed. The next big meet is this weekend’s Russian Championships.
Pole Vault
1. Yevgeniy Lukyanenko, RUS, 84
2. Brad Walker, USA, 79
3. Derek Miles, USA, 52
4. Steven Hooker, AUS, 50
5. Maksym Mazuryk, UKR, 46
6. Tim Lobinger, GER, 41
7. Danny Ecker, GER, 40
8. Sergey Kucheryanu, RUS, 38
9. Fabian Schulze, GER, 36.5
10. Denys Yurchenko, UKR, 33
Had Walker won the Olympic Trials, he would have taken over first place in the standings. In fact, his only losses have been in the two biggest meets–the trials and the World Indoor Championships–a trend that does not bode well for Beijing.
Long Jump
1. Irving Saladino, PAN, 77
2. Godfrey Khotso Mokoena, RSA, 70
3. Hussein Taher Al-Sabee, KSA, 68
4. Mohamed Salman Al Khuwalidi, KSA, 66
5. Brian Johnson, USA, 55
6. Loúis Tsátoumas, GRE, 50
7. Miguel Pate, USA, 47
8. Gable Garenamotse, BOT, 40
9. Ibrahim Camejo, CUB, 37
10. Trevell Quinley, USA, 36
Saladino’s return from injury and victory in Rome took him into the top spot. Also making a move up the charts is Tsátoumas, with several quality wins in Greece. Quinley’s big victory at the Olympic Trials can only be described as a fluke until he manages another similar success.
Triple Jump
1. Phillips Idowu, GBR, 69
2. Nelson Évora, POR, 59
3. Arnie David Girat, CUB, 53
4. Aarik Wilson, USA, 43
5. Randy Lewis, GRN, 37
6. Dmitrij Valukevic, SVK, 35
7. Leevan Sands, BAH, 33
8. Osniel Tosca, CUB, 31
9. Kenta Bell, USA, 28
10. Aleksandr Petrenko, RUS, 27
First and second are fairly obvious; World Indoor champ Idowu is undefeated this year and has by far the longest jump, while Évora’s only stumble was third at the World Indoors, and he has avenged that loss to Girat during the outdoor season.
Shot Put
1. Reese Hoffa, USA, 98
2. Christian Cantwell, USA, 84
3. Adam Nelson, USA, 71
4. Tomasz Majewski, POL, 58
5. Dorian Scott, JAM, 48
6. Ryan Whiting, USA, 44
7. Peter Sack, GER, 40
8. Garrett Johnson, USA, 37
8. Rutger Smith, NED, 37
10. Russ Winger, USA, 35
Hoffa’s best of the year was at the Olympic Trials, putting him clear of the field. Not in the standings yet, but likely soon to be, is 2004 Olympic champion Andrei Mikhnevich.
Discus Throw
1. Ehsan Hadadi, IRI, 81
2. Virgilijus Alekna, LTU, 71
3. Gerd Kanter, EST, 67
4. Mario Pestano, ESP, 63
5. Robert Harting, GER, 55
6. Ian Waltz, USA, 51
7. Piotr Malachowski, POL, 51
8. Zoltán Kövágó, HUN, 41
9. Gabor Mate, HUN, 38
10. Yennifer Frank Casañas, ESP, 37
Little is new here; Hadadi continues to lead, Alekna continues to chase, and the next few are very tightly bunched.
Hammer Throw
1. Krisztian Pars, HUN, 56
2. Primož Kozmus, SLO, 54
3. Marco Lingua, ITA, 45
4. Libor Charfrietag, SVK, 44
5. Szymon Ziolkowski, POL, 37
6. Vadim Devyatovskiy, BLR, 34
7. A.G. Kruger, USA, 28
7. Nicola Vizzoni, ITA, 28
9. Markus Esser, GER, 27
10. Ali Mohamed Al-Zinkawi, KUW, 25
Pars overtook the top spot with a win this week in Rethimno. Keep an eye out for Ivan Tsikhan, who just opened his 2008 season at the Belarussian Championships with a throw more than 10 feet further than anyone else has made this year.
Javelin Throw
1. Andreas Thorkildsen, NOR, 83
2. Tero Pitkamaki, FIN, 70
3. Mike Hazle, USA, 58
4. Tero Jarvenpaa, FIN, 55
5. Erik Rags, LAT, 51
6. Jarrod Bannister, NZL, 42
7. Peter Esenwein, GER, 40
8. Igor Janik, POL, 37
9. John Robert Oosthuizen, RSA, 29
9. Sergey Makarov, RUS, 29
Pitkamaki’s win in Rome was not enough to overtake Thorkildsen.
