USA Track & Field released its Olympic squad today, and the experienced team, which includes 15 Olympic and 31 outdoor World Championships medalists, will be amongst the strongest in Beijing.
“This Olympic Team is one of our strongest ever, with more medal-winning experience in a wider range of events, from sprints to distances and field events, than we’ve had in many decades,” said USATF President and acting CEO Bill Roe in a prepared statement.
Team USA won a total of 25 medals, eight of them gold, at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. In Osaka last summer at the IAAF World Championships in Athletics, the Americans won 26 medals (14 gold), which tied the world championships record for gold medals.
America’s prowess in the sprints is well-established, and there is little doubt that stars like Allyson Felix, Sanya Richards, Tyson Gay, and Jeremy Wariner will contend for both individual and realy gold medals. However, the team also has surprising strength in the middle and long distances. While double world champion Bernard Lagat is the most prominent, marathoners Ryan Hall and Deena Kastor, and distance doublers Shalane Flanagan and Kara Goucher also have legitimate chances to medal (Kastor won bronze in Athens in the marathon).
“While it would take an incredible performance to match our medal counts of recent championships, we certainly feel that this team has what it takes to again top the medal tables,” Roe added.
The most experienced Olympian is high jumper Amy Acuff who is on her fourth team. Women’s 400m hurdler Queen Harrison, 19, is the youngest member of the team, while racewalker Joanne Dow, 44, is the oldest.
