Shannon Rowbury, Erin Donohue and Christin Wurth-Thomas made the U.S. Olympic Team today in the women’s 1500-meter finals.

Treniere Clement led the race through the first 400 meters in 68.17 seconds. Wurth-Thomas and Rowbury then took the lead around 500 meters. Lindsey Gallo pulled to the front at 800 meters in 2:15.73, but could not hold off Rowbury and Wurth-Thomas.

Rowbury then opened a huge gap to break away from the pack.

“I had a few plans depending on how the race went with the wind, but I just tried to stay relaxed and tried to drive through the finish,” Rowbury said.

The race behind Rowbury was close over the last 600 meters between Gallo, Donohue, Amy Mortimer and Morgan Uceny.

“I had a race plan coming into the race and I tried to stick to that,” Wurth-Thomas said. “(Having the “A” standard) was huge. I was counting as we went around every lap. We went out slow, so I knew we weren’t on an “A” standard pace. It’s very exciting (to make the Olympic team). That’s where all the hard work has paid off and now it’s time to go to Beijing and see what we can do.”

Rowbury won in 4:05.48, followed by Donohue (4:08.20) and Wurth-Thomas (4:08.48).

“It’s just exciting, and a big relief at the same time. I’ve spent my whole career, the past year, to get here and finally make it. I didn’t have the smoothest road getting here. It took awhile to get here at the national level,” Donohue said. “I always knew I was good. It feels good to prove it to everyone else. That’s what competition is all about.”
