Shalane Flanagan and Kara Goucher already have their tickets to Beijing in the 10000 meters, but that does not mean they are satisfied. Tonight they each won their heat of the 5000-meter semifinal.
Flanagan’s heat began with Lauren Fleshman in the lead. By 4000 meters, Flanagan, the American record holder, took over to win in 15:35.86. Fleshman faded to third in 15:36.79 after she was passed by Maureen McCandless (15:36.52).
The second heat was even faster, thanks to Sara Slattery who was not afraid to push the pace early. Two-time Olympian Jen Rhines stayed close and held that position after Slattery (15:40.24) eventually dropped to sixth. Rhines moved to first-place position with three laps to go and stayed there until the bell lap when Goucher (15:32.22) passed her. Adrianna Lambie ran a great race, finishing third in the heat with 15:32.31.
