Allyson Felix was almost preordained to win the 200-meteres but in track and field everyone has learned that anything can happen and nothing is guaranteed. She did not feel the pressure mounting after she failed to qualify in the 100-meters for the Olympic Team.
Why?
Because Allyson Felix is that cold of a 200-meter runner.
“I’m just happy to win and make the team because I can fine tune now,” said Felix. “My start wasn’t great and it really never is great but my strength is really coming down the stretch. I’ve been relaxing and waiting for the last couple days for the final today.”
Allyson Felix got out of the blocks slowly before kicking hard off the curb to run the fastest time of the year in 21.82. The 100 meter Olympic Trials champion Muna Lee generated a lot of powerful momentum down the stretch to propel her to second place, before Marshevet Hooker (22.20) solidified her Olympic team spot with a third place finish.
It took Hooker, who had the fifth fastest time ever (wind aided) in the 100, to dive across the finish line to win the final spot in the 200 by .01 seconds. She had to do what ever it took because despite her fast times she did not qualify in the 100 meters.
“I feel blessed, relieved, over joy, I felt everything at once,” said Hooker who hit the track to produce scrapes on her hip, elbow, and leg. I didn’t feel the sting until we were given the awards.”
