Shot Put
1. Valerie Vili, 74
2. Nadine Kleinert, 46
3. Nadzeya Ostapchuk, 43
4. Misleydis Gonzalez, 41
5. Meiju Li, 34
6. Anna Omarova, 31
6. Chiara Rosa, 31
8. Christina Schwanitz, 30
9. Kristin Heaston, 29
10. Cleopatra Borel-Brown, 26

Kiwi Vili dominated the indoor circuit and picked up right where she left off in a late-May meet held in the Beijing Olympic stadium. Ostapchuk has only competed three times this year and Kleinert didn’t do much indoors, otherwise they would be further ahead of the other throwers.

Discus Throw
1. Stephanie Brown-Trafton, 34
2. Darya Pishchalnikova, 33
3. Aimin Song, 32
4. Yania Ferrales, 27
5. Aretha Thurmond, 24
5. Nicoleta Grasu, 24
7. Yarelis Barrios, 23
8. Natalya Fokina-Semenova, 22
9. Becky Breisch, 21
10. Suzy Powell Ross, 20

Leader Brown-Trafton exposes the weakness of this system; she gained bonus points from some big throws in meets held under ideal conditions, but the rest of her competitive record doesn’t merit the top ranking. Bet on Pishchalnikova or Song to win in Beijing.

Hammer Throw
1. Kamila Skolimowska, 50
2. Ivana Brkljacic, 48
3. Yipsi Moreno, 47
4. Anita Wlodarczyk, 46
5. Martina Danišová-Hrasnová, 46
6. Betty Heidler, 42
7. Stéphanie Falzon, 35
8. Manuela Montebrun, 33
9. Wenxiu Zhang, 31
10. Irina Sekachova, 26

This event is a very tight one, with just eight points separating first from sixth. Looking forward to Beijing, any of those half-dozen could win. Moreno has put up the best distances but has competed almost exclusively in Cuba with little real competition.

Javelin Throw
1. Barbora Špotáková, 59
2. Christina Obergföll, 36
3. Osleidys Menéndez, 32
4. Zahra Bani, 30
5. Goldie Sayers, 27
6. Barbara Madejczyk, 21
7. Yanet Cruz, 20
8. Linda Stahl, 19
9. Jarmila Klimešová, 18
10. Lavern Eve, 14

As was all of last year, Špotáková and Obergföll are ahead of the rest. Brit Sayers could hardly be called a “new find”, as she was an age-group star for a long time, but her competitive results so far this year suggest she could make a big breakthrough, possibly a medal in Beijing.
