3000 meters
(includes no-pacemaker championship-type 5k races)
1. Meseret Defar, 68
2. Meselech Melkamu, 42
3. Sylvia Jebiwott Kibet, 38
4. Tirunesh Dibaba, 38
5. Gelete Burka, 35
6. Ejegayehu Dibaba, 32
7. Kim Smith, 28
8. Olga Komiagina, 26
9. Ruth Bisibori Nyangau, 26
10. Grace Momanyi, 21
World Indoor champion Defar is still the best at this distance, but hasn’t yet run against her rival, 5k world-record-breaker Tirunesh Dibaba.
5000 & 10,000 meters
1. Tirunesh Dibaba, 74
2. Gelete Burka, 50
3. Ejegayehu Dibaba, 46
4. Meselech Melkamu, 44
5. Lucy Kabuu Wangui, 39
6. Meseret Defar, 38
7. Grace Kwamboka Momanyi, 37
8. Linet Chepkwemoi Masai, 35
8. Priscilla Jepleting Cherono, 35
10. Sylvia Jebiwott Kibet, 32
Dibaba was already the leader before she broke the 5k world record in Oslo, which only pushed her even farther ahead. American ace Shalane Flanagan is easily good enough to rate here, but with only one track race in 2008 she just doesn’t have the points.
3000m Steeplechase
1. Donna MacFarlane, 65
2. Ruth Bisibori Nyangau, 52
3. Zemzem Ahmed, 47
4. Eunice Jepkorir, 38
4. Korene Hinds, 38
6. Gulnara Samitova-Galkina, 35
7. Mekdes Bekele, 28
8. Jenny Barringer, 27
9. Yekaterina Volkova, 23
10. Sofia Asefa, 18
This event is a bit of a jumble. McFarlane has three wins to her credit but was third in Oslo last week. World list leader Jepkorir was ninth in that race, which Samitova-Galkina won handily. #2-ranked Nyangau hasn’t won anything, but has been fast and consistent. NCAA champ Barringer could be a sleeper; I would not be surprised if she won a medal in Beijing.
