liu xiang and david oliver race in the 110m hurdlesOver the last two days I’ve rolled out my World Points Standings for the men’s sprints and the middle & long distance events. We continue with the various barrier events:

110m Hurdles
1. David Oliver, 73
2. Joel Brown, 54
3. Liu Xiang, 42
4. Dayron Robles, 38
5. Ryan Wilson, 24
6. Anwar Moore, 23
7. Allen Johnson, 22
8. Antwon Hicks, 21
9. Andy Turner, 20
10. Thomas Blaschek, 20

As is usual, the USA dominates this event with six of the top ten positions. Oliver is clearly the dominant hurdler of the early season, but expect Brown to come back to the pack fairly quickly. Xiang’s recent problems (injury in New York, false start in Eugene) have kept us from finding out how good he really is right now. Robles dominated the indoor season but has raced only twice outdoors, losing to Oliver by just 0.01 in Berlin.

400m Hurdles
1. Bershawn Jackson, 58
2. LJ van Zyl, 56
3. Danny McFarlane, 47
4. Adrian Findlay, 32
4. Periklis Iakovakis, 32
6. Isa Phillips, 31
7. Kerron Clement, 29
8. Brendan Cole, 27
9. Marek Plawgo, 26
10. Angelo Taylor, 20
Jackson is undefeated and one of only five contenders for the Golden League jackpot. But #7 Clement has actually put up better times, just in smaller meets against lesser competition. Jamaican McFarlane has split his two meetings with South African van Zyl.

3000m Steeplechase

1. Richard Kipkemboi Mateelong, 50
2. Paul Kipsiele Koech, 33
3. Collins Kosgei, 30
4. Michael Kipyego, 28
5. Benjamin Kiplagat, 21
6. Brimin Kiprop Kipruto, 17
7. Steve Slattery, 12
8. Nahom Mesfin, 11
9. Patrick Kipkirui Langat, 10

Believe it or not, two non-Kenyans actually made the top nine (American Slattery and Ethiopian Mesfin). Since the season has barely begun, only nine deserve mention. Mateelong is undefeated in four meets including the African Championships. Koech has entered only one steeple race in 2008, a great solo run at the Reebok Grand Prix, but has shown excellent form in flat 3k races.
