Tyson Gay put together the best race the world has ever witnessed in 9.68. The wind-aided time (+4.1) still makes it the fastest a human has covered 100-meters.
Afterwards Gay said, “I just stayed relaxed and ran through the line because I didn’t want to make the same mistake twice. My coach Jon Drummond told me before getting in the blocks to look at the clock, finish line, and photo, and that is what you run to.”
And in the process qualified for the Olympic team along with Florida State runner Walter Dix (9.80) and Darvis Patton (9.84).
There were high praises of Walter Dix from Tyson Gay. When asked, Gay said, “He reminds me a lot of myself. …Dix is a tough competitor and has proved a lot today by staying in the Florida State uniform and proved to the world that he is capable of running on the professional level. He ignored the agents, shoe contracts, and blocked out all of that to focus on running. He didn’t listen to the hype and all of that contract crap.”
Six runners managed to ran under 10-seconds; the most to do so in a single 100m contest in history.
