Prefontaine Classic Preview: Field Events

prefontaine classic 2008 posterContinuing with our preview of Sunday’s meet in Eugene, Oregon, here are the tentative start lists for the field events. The IAAF also has a field event preview.

Women’s Hammer Throw
3:10 p.m. EDT (12:10 p.m. local)
Hawyard Field & Pre Classic records: 229′ 1″ / 69.82 meters, Erin Gilreath (USA), 2006

Betty Heidler (Germany)
Superfan World Ranking: #2
PR: 76.55 meters (2006) 2008 best: 72.91 meters
The defending World Champion has thrown over 70 meters five times already this season; her lone loss came at the European Throwing Cup.

Ivana Brkljacic (Croatia)
PR: 74.08 meters (2007) 2008 best: 73.62 meters
Has competed only twice this year (and hence not in my World Rankings), but has put up very big marks both times.

Amber Campbell
PR: 70.33 (2007) 2008 best: 70.19 meters
Campbell won this year’s USATF Indoor championships in the weight throw.

Jenny Dahlgren (Argentina)
PR: 72.94 meters (2007) 2008 best: 66.38 meters
The native of Beunos Aires won last year’s NCAA Championship.

Loree Smith
PR: 70.03 meters (2005) 2008 best: 69.56 meters

Bethany Hart
PR: 69.95 meters (2005) 2008 best: 68.93 meters
Hart was second at last week’s Reebok Grand Prix.

Britney Henry
PR: 68.71 meters (2008)
Riley won at last week’s Reebok Grand Prix.

Cari Soong
PR: 65.86 meters (2005) 2008 best: 62.03 meters

Olga Kuzenkova (Russia)
PR: 75.68 meters (2000) 2008 best: 65.47
At various times Kuzenkova was World champion, Olympic champion, and held the world record. Her first major outing was last month at the Super Grand Prix meet in Doha, Qatar.

Men’s Triple Jump
3:15 p.m. EDT (12:15 p.m. local)
A start list has not yet been announced. A preview will be posted when information is available.

Men’s Pole Vault
3:50 p.m. EDT (12:50 p.m. local)
Hayward Field record: 19′ 9″ / 6.02 meters, Jeff Hartwig (USA), 1999
Prefontaine Classic record: 19′ 6 1/4″ / 5.95 meters, Sergey Bubka (Ukraine), 1994

Brad Walker
Superfan World Ranking: #3
PR: 6.00 meters (2006) 2008 best: 5.85 meters
Walker is the reigning US indoor champion and took silver at March’s World Indoor Championships.

Derek Miles
PR: 5.85 meters (2005) 2008 best: 5.80 meters

Giovanni Lanaro
PR: 5.82 meters (2007) 2008 best: 5.80 meters
He is the defending Pre Classic champion.

Mark Hollis
PR: 5.75 meters (2008)

Jeff Hartwig
PR: 6.03 meters (2000) 2008 best: 5.70
Hartwig was fourth at the recent FBK Games in Holland.

Tommy Skipper
PR: 5.80 meters (2007) 2008 best: 5.70 meters
Skipper won last year’s NCAA championship while representing the Oregon Ducks.

Jacob Pauli
PR: 5.82 meters (2001) 2008 best: 5.62 meters

Russ Buller
PR: 5.81 meters (2001) 2008 best: 5.61 meters
Buller was the 2006 US outdoor champion.

Tim Mack
PR: 6.01 meters (2004) 2008 best: 5.45 meters

Women’s Discus Throw
4:07 p.m. EDT (1:07 p.m. local)
Hawyard Field & Pre Classic records: 214′ 5″ / 65.35 meters, Lisa Marie Vizaniari (Australia) 2000

Stephanie Brown-Trafton
PR: 66.17 meters (2008)
Brown-Trafton has used wind-tunnel like conditions to her advantage for big distances on the west coast and in Maui. She was third at last week’s Reebok Grand Prix.

Suzy Powell Ross
PR: 67.67 (2007) 2008 best: 63.69 meters
Fourth at the Reebok Grand Prix.

Becky Breisch
PR: 67.37 meters (2007) 2008 best: 63.70
Won last week at the Reebok Grand Prix.

Aretha Thurmond
PR: 65.86 (2004) 2008 best: 63.06
The four-time US champion had a down year in 2007 but appears to have bounced back. She was second at last week’s Reebok Grand Prix.

Gia Lewis
PR: 59.96 meters (2008)

Men’s High Jump
4:15 p.m. EDT (1:15 local)

Andrey Silnov (Russia)
Superfan World Ranking: #3
PR: 2.37 meters (2008)
A third-place finish (off the tiebreaker) at the Russian indoor championships kept him off their team for the World indoor championships.

Ivan Ukhov (Russia)
Superfan World Ranking: #4
PR: 2.39 meters (2007) 2008 best: 2.36 meters
Like his teammate, left off the World indoor team due to a porr placing at the national championships.

Andra Manson
Superfan World Ranking: #5
PR: 2.33 meters (2008)
The reigning US indoor champion, Manson won bronze at the World indoor championships.

Jesse Williams
Superfan World Ranking: #8
PR: 2.33 meters (2007) 2008 best: 2.32 meters

Donald Thomas (Bahamas)
PR: 2.35 meters (2007) 2008 best: 2.28 meters
Last year’s World champion hasn’t jumped much yet this year.

Germaine Mason (Great Britain)
PR: 2.34 meters (2003) 2008 best: 2.25 meters

Jamie Nieto
PR: 2.34 (2004) 2008 best: 2.27 meters

Tora Harris
PR: 2.33 (2006)

Men’s Shot Put
4:26 p.m. EDT (1:26 p.m. local)
Hawyard Field & Pre Classic records: 72′ 9 3/4″ / 22.19 meters, Kevin Toth (USA) 2002

Reese Hoffa
Superfan World Ranking: #1
PR: 22.43 meters (2007) 2008 best: 21.48 meters
Hoffa is on an upswing over the last few weeks.

Christian Cantwell
Superfan World Ranking: #2
PR: 22.54 meters (2004) 2008 best: 22.18 meters
The US and World indoor champion is having his most consistent year ever.

Adam Nelson
Superfan World Ranking: #3
PR: 22.51 (2002) 2008 best: 22.40 meters
Having consistency trouble, but when he’s on he’s unbeatable.

Dorian Scott (Jamaica)
Superfan World Ranking: #5
PR: 21.45 meters (2008)
Has quietly become an Olympic medal threat.

Dylan Armstrong (Canada)
PR: 20.92 meters (2008)
Recently broke the Canadian national record.

Dan Taylor
PR: 21.59 meters (2006) 2008 best: 20.85 meters
Struggled through the indoor season but looks like he’s getting it together now.

Women’s Long Jump
