One of New England’s great running traditions continues on Sunday when the 28th edition of the Stratton Faxon Fairfield Half-Marathon steps off from Jennings Beach in Fairfield, Conn.
Event coordinator John Bysiewicz of JB Sports expects about 3500 runners from six nations and 35 states to participate in the half-marathon, 5-K and kids’ 1 kilometer run.
“This year’s race should be very exciting,” said Bysiewicz in a prepared statement.
Athletes from Kenya and Ethiopia are the favorites for the $1500 winners’ checks. There is also a $1,000 bonus for a course record (1:02:39/1:12:06).
On the Kenyan side Valentine Orare, Phillip Koech, Caroline Chepkorir and Maria Busienei will be vying for the win. On the Ethiopian side the athletes will be Wellay Amare, Meseret Kotu and Sebleledet Mariam. An African man has won the last 15 editions of the race.
“With no clear-cut men’s or women’s favorite, the race is wide open,” added Bysiewicz.
The out-and-back course is very scenic and mostly follows the rugged Connecticut coastline. There are several significant hills, including a big climb in the 8th and 9th kilometers. Conditions can also be hot and humid, so fast times are difficult.
The race has a proud history. Former champions include course record holder John Yuda (1:02:39, 2001), Bill Reifsnyder (1988, ‘89), Nuta Olaru (2002), Anne-Marie Lauck (1997), and Steve Spence (1992).
