Faces in Races: Flanagan, Goucher & Huddle Lead the Way in Women’s 10,000m

Shalane Flanagan
Shalane Flanagan enters the 2008 USATF Olympic Trials as the favorite and American Record holder in both the 5000m and the 10000m. Flanagan’s PRs of 14:44.80 and 30:34.49 place her in the company of the world’s elite and demonstrate her ability to medal in this summer’s Olympic Games.
Flanagan began her running career as a high schooler in Marblehead, Massachusetts and had a standout career at the University of North Carolina. As a Tar Heel “Shenanigans” dominated the college ranks, winning two individual NCAA cross country championships and earning 15 All-American certificates. After graduating in 2004 Flanagan signed with Nike and made the U.S. Olympic team in the 5000m. She placed 11th in the semifinals of the Athens Games and continued her success with victories in the 2004 and 2005 USATF 4km XC races and the 2005 USATF outdoor 5000m.
Towards the end of the 2005 outdoor season Flanagan succumbed to a foot injury that had plagued her since the 2004 track season. The injury cost Shalene the 2006 season as she struggled to find the root of the problem, eventually learning that she had an extra bone in the affected foot. After a successful surgery Flanagan returned with a bang, smashing the American 3000m record with a shocking 8:33.25 clocking at the 2007 Boston Indoor Games. From there Flanagan has continued to excel, again winning the USATF 5000m championship in 2007 as well as the 2008 USATF XC championship. Her American Record in the 10000m came in her first serious attempt at the distance, signaling a bright future in that event as well. Flanagan attributes much of her recent success to her coach, John Cook, and his emphasis on speed work and drills to complement her natural aerobic ability. She will face stiff competition in both the 5k and the 10k at these Trials, but has certainly shown the ability to win both.
Kara Goucher:
Kara Goucher will toe the line in the 10000m at the 2008 US Olympic Trials as the reigning World bronze medalist and one of the brightest American distance prospects for the Beijing Games. Goucher is a Minnesota native and an alumnus of the University of Colorado, where she earned a psychology degree in 2001.
Kara Goucher (then Grgas-Wheeler) burst onto the elite running scene by winning the 2000 NCAA cross country championship and following that up with outdoor titles in the NCAA 3000m and 5000m. Her post-collegiate running was plagued by injuries until 2004, when Kara and husband Adam moved from Boulder to Eugene to begin training with legendary coach and runner Alberto Salazar.
Kara took a huge step onto the world stage in 2006 with a 31:17 clocking in the 10000m and a 15:08 PR in the 5000m. Her success continued in 2007 with her third place finish in the 10000m at the World Championships, a 14:55 PR in the 5000m, and a stunning 1:06:57 victory over Paula Radcliffe in the Great North Run Half Marathon. Goucher has performed well thus far in 2008 by achieving the Olympic A standard in the 10000m and running 14:58 in the 5000m at the Prefontaine Classic. She will be a favorite to make the U.S. 10000m team, and will also be a strong contender for a medal in Beijing.
Molly Huddle
Molly Huddle will enter this week’s U.S. Olympic Trials with a legitimate chance to make the American team in the 5000m or the 10000m. The former Notre Dame star has run 15:17 for 5000m and 31:27 for 10000m, both of which rank her near the top of the U.S. performance lists.
Huddle began competitive running as a high schooler at Notre Dame HS in Elmira New York. There she trained by herself but still managed a 10:01 National Record in the two mile. From there Molly moved on to the University of Notre Dame where she earned nine All-American awards for the Irish as well as a biology degree in 2007. She plans to attend medical school when her professional running career is over, but for now Huddle is focused solely on her Olympic dream. She is currently sponsored by Saucony and trains with Ray Treacy and the Run Providence group in Rhode Island. Huddle has the third fastest seed time in the 10000m and so has an excellent chance to make the U.S. team in that event, and also has an outside chance to qualify in the 5000m.
