USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships Logo 2008This past weekend in Columbus, Ohio, 22 athletes punched their tickets to the World Junior Championships (pending meeting qualifying standards).

The marquee matchup of Friday was the men’s long jump, in which the champions of the two major high school indoor national championships, Marquise Goodwin (Rowlett, Texas) and Christian Taylor (Goodwin, Georgia) met up against each other. The former won with a national high school leading mark of 25′ 0″, while the latter lost out on the precious second spot to Fresno State freshman Gary Lee.

The performance of that day was in the men’s hurdles. High school junior Booker Nunley (Garner, North Carolina) beat two college freshmen by .41 seconds and tied the stadium record for the high school (39″) hurdles with 13.40. This ties for 8th on the all-time high school list, and the stadium record he shares with Miami Dolphins reciever & kick returner Tedd Ginn Jr.

On Saturday, the event of the day was the women’s long jump. Shakia Forbes (Seton Hall) defeated last year’s Pan-Am Junior champion, Jamesha Youngblood (Oregon), whose final attempt came up a scat quarter-inch short.

The performance of Saturday might have gone to William Wynne (Kennesaw, GA), who broke a 24-year-old meet record in the 400 hurdles, or to the thunderstorm that delayed the meet by over two hours. But I have to give it to Elijah Greer (Lake Oswego, OR) for unexpectedness. In the 800, he broke his one-day-old PR by two seconds to decimate the field in 1:47.68.

Sunday saw several great matchups. As predicted here, the men’s high jump came down to high schoolers Erik Kynard (Toledo, OH) and Ryan Fleck (Napoleon, OH) with the latter pulling off a mild upset. Geoffrey Tabor (Ardmore, OK) pulled out a win in the discus on his final attempt. In the women’s 1500, phenom Jordan Hasay (San Louis Obispo, CA) won another national title but was pushed fairly hard by Oregon’s Alex Kosinski. Wisconsin’s Evan Jager took the lead in the men’s 1500 just before the bell and pulled away for a clear victory.
