Deena Kastor could see a sizeable payday at tomorrow’s Gate River Run in Jacksonville, Fla., which serves as the U.S. 15-K championships for both men and women.
Already the U.S. record holder for 15-K (47:15), Kastor will be looking for her sixth title in Jacksonville, worth $12,000. However, she may pick up an additional $5000 should she finish ahead of the first man (the elite women are given a five minute headstart). That seems likely given that the men’s field is not as strong as in previous years.
Kastor’s top challengers for the women’s title will be 2005 USA 10,000m champion Katie McGregor, and 2007 Pan Am Games 10,000m champion Sara Slattery.
However, Olympians Dan Browne and Brian Sell will also be pushing her from the men’s race, attempting to close down the five minute gap and win the battle of the sexes bonus. Joining them in the chase will be Team USA Minnesota teammates Andrew Carlson, Jason Lehmkuhle and Matt Gabrielson.
Athletes will compete for a total prize purse of $58,000.
