Organizers of the Garry Bjorklund Half-Marathon, held on conjunction with the well-known Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth, Minn., announced that they have doubled the prize money purse for the 2008 edition of the race, scheduled for Sunday, June 21. This will be the second year that the half-marathon will offer cash prizes.
“The addition of a cash purse in 2007 helped us attract a quality field of elite runners, and we expect this increase will bring in an even stronger group of half marathoners this year,” said Scott Keenan, executive director of Grandma’s Marathon, in a prepared statement.
The champions of the men’s and women’s open divisions will each receive $1,500, a $500 increase from last year. The second place finisher will receive $1000, with $800 going for third. Prize money will be paid 8-deep, going down to $150 for 8th place. In addition, masters cash awards will be available with $700 going to the top male and female over-40 finishers. The total purse is $14,000.
Americans Chad Johnson (1:05:18) and Paige Higgins (1:14:46) won last year’s edition of the race which featured 5,263 finishers (the marathon had another 6,898 finishers).
