They had competition from new rivals, but the outcome was the same: Thomas Dold and Suzy Walsham once again prevailed at the Empire State Building Run-Up here yesterday.
Dold, a 23 year-old German economics student from Stuttgart, set back a credible challenge from American ultra and mountain runner, Ricky Gates, taking his third consecutive title in 10 minutes and eight seconds. Gates finished eight seconds back.
“At this moment, I’m feeling so tired, but I’ll feel good soon,” Dold told event organizers, the New York Road Runners, after his win. “It’s always a really hard fight, especially at the start. Then you leave the other runners behind and you hope you don’t see them again, and you just focus and don’t think about anything except the victory.”
Walsham, 34, an Australian accountant who lives and works in Singapore, dominated the women’s race despite suffering a serious calf strain more than two weeks ago. She ascended the 86 flights to the finish line on the outdoor observation deck with sweeping views of the city in 12 minutes and 44 seconds, well ahead of four-time winner Cindy Moll-Harris, who ran 13:37.
“It was fantastic to win such a famous race again this year,” said Walsham, an accomplished 1500m runner. “I nearly didn’t come, but I did a stair session on Friday and it felt okay. Today it was fine.”
Yesterday’s event was the 31st annual race up the 1,576 steps of New York City’s tallest building. There were 215 finishers.
