USATF Fills Men’s 10-K Championship Void

USA Track & Field LogoWhen their annual convention closed last December in Honolulu, USA Track & Field had a noticeable void in their national championships calendar: there was no 10-K road championship for men. That competition was hosted successfully last year by the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta, Ga., but because the Peachtree takes place every year on July 4 — right in the middle of the U.S. Olympic Trials — hosting the championship there was a non-starter for 2008.

Enter the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10-K in Richmond, Va., one of the fastest growing road races in the United States. Last year’s edition saw 20,587 finishers, an increase of 25% from a year earlier. USATF announced today that they had awarded the 10-K championship for men to this event, which will be held for the 9th time on April 5.

“We welcome the addition of the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10-K to our USA Men’s Championship circuit,” said Glenn Latimer, chairman of the men’s long distance running committee for USATF. “In an Olympic year this is a chance for our top distance runners to race on the roads in a quality event, before their focus turns to track racing.”

Indeed, U.S. men will be able to compete in three national road championships in rapid sequence in the spring: 15-K (March 8, Jacksonville, Fla.), 8-K (March 15, New York, N.Y.) and 10-K (April 5, Richmond, Va.).

The Metropolitan Richmond Sports Backers are the organizers behind the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10-K, and they organize more than 35 different events in the Richmond area with 79,000 participants and 262,000 spectators including: USATF Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships, USA Triathlon Duathlon National Championships, SunTrust Richmond Marathon, Capital One Adventure Games and McDonald’s X-Country Festival.

Last year’s U.S. 10-K champion was Abdi Abdirahman of Tucson, Ariz., who finished second overall at the Peachtree in 28:11. The 2008 winner will receive $7500 out of a $25,000 purse.
