The two-day Hakone Ekiden concluded yesterday, a grueling test for Japan’s collegiate teams, covering over 200 kilometers of running. Komazawa University won the title in a total time of 11:05:00 over Waseda University, which had a one minute 14 second lead after the first day, but ended up behind by two minutes and 29 seconds in the end.
To give you some idea of the intensity of this competition, take a look at the video clip posted at YouTube, below. I don’t know the name of the athlete or his team (I’m hoping one of you will be able to help me), but based on the time on the clock it’s in the last stage and he’s desperately trying to finish the race for his team.

That’s an amazing effort…

January 4th, 2008 at 3:01 pmThe runner who collapsed in the Hakone Ekiden was Hiroyuki Ono. He was running the fifth leg of relay for Juntendo University, last year’s Hakone Ekiden winning team. He was about 500 meters from the end of his leg. Actually, the following day, two other runners from other universities did not finish - the first time in the 84 year history of the race that three schools did not finish.
