Arkansas, a perennial track & field powerhouse, has assembled a strong team middle-distance runners and jumpers, led by the men’s distance medley relay team, which ran the fastest time in the nation with a 9:38.37. Lanky (6′2″, 140) Junior Razorback Alex McClary ran a time of 1:49.28, the 2nd fastest time in the nation. Alain Bailey, a sophomore from Jamaica, long jumped 25′ 7.25″, earning him SEC Field Athlete of the Week honors. Tennessee, led by Ruben Williams who ran a 20.76 in the 200m and a 6.65 in the 60m, moved to 2nd in the rankings. Oklahoma moved all the way up to 3rd from 17th (in the preseason rankings) primarily because of triple jumper Shardae Boutte, who jumped 52′ 11¼”, the 2nd longest time in the nation.
