The executive director of the Boston Athletic Association, Guy Morse, announced to his staff today that he was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. The B.A.A. is the not-for-profit organization which owns and manages the Boston Marathon and other athletics events.
“Clearly, we are fortunate to work and reside in the Boston area,” Mores wrote to his staff in an annual goodwill message. “On another, more personal level, this is even more evident to me as I was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer, as some of you are aware. After that surprise and several weeks of research and second opinions, I have now begun my own marathon of sorts, an aggressive six month treatment protocol under the direction of The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.”
Morse, 56, has been with the B.A.A. for 21 years, and was instrumental in helping to bring the Boston Marathon into the professional era, engineering a long-term financial commitment with John Hancock Financial Services, the financial engine behind the professional fields of the race. Morse was also the driving force behind Boston’s bid for the USA Olympic Team Trials - Women’s Marathon which the B.A.A. will host on April 20, one day before the 112th Boston Marathon.
“I am confident in the future, as I believe there are no finer doctors and nurses anywhere than right here in our backyard,” Morse continued. “As such, I look forward to sharing the excitement this year presents and to the unwavering support always shown me and our great annual running tradition known to many around the world simply as ‘Boston’.”
