In lieu of a cold, harsh indoor season, world and Olympic 400m champion Jeremy Wariner will begin his 2008 Olympic-season campaign outdoors in Australia. Although he usually begins racing in March, he is set to begin his season next year in February, a warm summer month in the Southern Hemisphere. He will be joined in Sydney and Melbourne by 100m world-record holder Asafa Powell, his training partner Darold Williamson and his coach Clyde Hart.
The 23-year old Texan said, “I am looking forward to running in Australia in February. I am excited about competing here for the first time as I prepare for the summer Olympics in Beijing.”
Wariner’s decision to train in the warmth of Australia may have been prompted by the miserable conditions he experienced during his first meet last season. At the North Texas Classic in Denton, TX on April 14th, 2007, he was set to run the 200m, but the cold and windy conditions forced him to withdraw from that race. Instead, he anchored the Waco All-Stars 4×400m Relay team to a 3:13.28 1st place finish with a split of 45.79. He had hoped to use the 200m race in that meet to work on his speed in order to try and break Michael Johnson’s world record of 43.18 in 2007. He got close last season with a 43.50 at the DN Galan meet in Stockholm, Sweden on August 7th, 2007. His performance on that day performance made him the 3rd fastest 400m runner of all time, only behind Johnson and Harry Reynolds’ 43.29. If he had been able to run the 200m race in Texas last April, he might have gotten the record. We’ll never know, but it appears that Wariner is not going to let bad weather conditions hinder his preparation for Beijing.
On the agenda:
200m at the Sydney Athletics Grand Prix, 2/16/2008
400m at the Telstra Melbourne Track Classic, 2/21/2008
