I was curious to know whether or not any single runner has posted world-class times in all of the following events: 100m, 200m, 400m and the 800m. I didn’t expect to find any (I didn’t) but I was shocked to learn that only 4 men have run world class times in the 100m, 200m and 400m.
Here are all of the men who have run world-class times in the 100m, 200m and 400m and their best times in each event:
Robson Caetano da Silva (BRA) 10.02 | 19.96 | 45.06
Xavier Carter (at right) (USA) 10.09 | 19.63 | 44.53
Michael Johnson (USA) 10.09 | 19.32 | 43.18
Michael Marsh (USA) 9.93 | 19.73 | 45.08
Perhaps more surprising is the fact that only 6 men have run world-class times in both the 400m and the 800m. Here are all of the men who have run a world-class time in both the 400m and the 800m and their best times in each event:
Mark Everett (USA) 44.59 | 1:43.20
Alberto Juantorena (CUB) 44.26 | 1:43.44
Benyounès Lahlou (MAR) 45.03 | 1:43.76
Yeimar López (CUB) 45.11 | 1:44.58
Hendrik Mokganyetsi (RSA) 44.59 | 1:44.62
Harald Schmid (FRG) 44.92 | 1:44.83
Next time, we’ll analyze the women’s performances.
