Nick Symmonds elite athlete blogHowdy!

First, I would like to thank Adam Jacobs and The Final Sprint for providing me this opportunity.

As I have attained some of my professional goals, I have received more attention for my accomplishments and have been contacted by many fans and friends offering words of encouragement and asking for advice.

I thank all of you for your support over the last few years and apologize if I have failed to get back to you! The life of a runner can be hectic at times to say the least.

I am especially excited to blog for The Final Sprint because I feel it will be a much better forum for people to ask questions, seek advice, and generally find out what is going on! I will continue to update my website, nicksymmonds.com, with photos, videos, and race recaps, but now will also be blogging bi-monthly here. Please feel free to contact me through The Final Sprint if there is a particular subject you would like to know my opinion on and I’ll try to include it in a blog. I have a lot of opinions, and am usually pretty eager to share them!

I’ll keep this first blog somewhat short; just a quick update on how life in Eugene is treating me. After taking about three weeks off after Osaka I returned to Eugene, OR pretty out-of-shape and eager to start working out. Over the last 6-8 weeks I have spent my days returning to the life of a professional runner. This includes workouts in the morning, easy runs in the evening, and plenty of sleeping, eating, and hydrating in between. I’ve always felt that putting in the base is the hardest part of the year, but truly what makes you the runner you are.

During these difficult months I will train more like a miler, running 70 miles a week in 10 runs. We do a lot of tempo runs and mile/1k repeats during this time of year, but also throw in a speed workout about once a week; i.e. hill repeats or 200s on the track. Though it is a much less stressful time of year for us, there is always the fear of that an ache or pain might turn into something more serious. I have been extremely attentive to these aches and through weekly massages and great medical advice seem to be holding up alright! It is always a fine balance between training hard enough and training too hard, but at this point in my career I feel like I have really begun to know my body and through constant communication with Coach Gags we are able to stay healthy and hungry all fall. This week will be my first at 70 miles (the highest I will run) and my mantra for the next few months is “consistency is key.”

These are the months that are going to define the kind of runner I will be in the spring/summer. Good luck to anyone else going through these miles of trails and trials of miles!

-Nick
