Lehigh will host the 2007 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Saturday morning on the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course. The Division I men’s 10K race will start at 11 a.m., followed by the Division I women’s 6K race at 12:15 p.m. Goodman Campus will also serve as host to the Division III Mideast Regional, with the women’s 6K race starting at 1:15, followed by the men’s 8K race at 2:15.
The Division I men’s race will feature 33 schools, including defending champion and nationally ranked Georgetown (No. 14) as well as Patriot League champion American and Paul Short winner Villanova. The Mountain Hawks will send eight runners to the course, led by freshman Dan McClimon and junior Dan DeWitt.
The women’s race will feature 33 schools, including defending champion and nationally ranked Princeton (No. 4), West Virginia (No. 14), Georgetown (No. 20) and Penn State (No. 28). The Princeton women are also the winners of this year’s Paul Short Run, finishing ahead of West Virginia. The Brown and White will send nine runners to the course, led by junior Shannon Alejandro, who was named to the All-Patriot League first team.
The Division III men’s race will feature 44 schools, including defending champion and nationally ranked Haverford (No. 4), Allegheny (No. 12), Carnegie Mellon (No. 18) and Dickinson (No. 27). Dickinson won the white race of this year’s Paul Short Run and second place finisher Johns Hopkins will also be participating in the race.
In the women’s race, 46 schools will send athletes to the course, including defending champion and nationally ranked Dickinson (No. 12), Haverford (No. 16) and Allegheny (No. 32). Grove City, the second place finisher in the women’s white race at the Paul Short Run will also be participating.
There will be eight other regional meets in Division I and seven in Division III occurring on Saturday. The other Division I locations are: Indiana, Bradley, Weber State, Harvard, Florida, Arkansas, Louisville and Oregon. The other Division III locations are: Connecticut College, St. Olaf, Wisconsin-Oshkosh, NYU, Calvin College, Christopher Newport and Lewis and Clark College.
The top two teams at each regional meet automatically qualify for the championship meet. Thirteen addition at-large teams will be selected by the track and field subcommittee on November 11. The first four individuals not on a qualifying team automatically advance to the finals. Two additional qualifiers will be selected at-large based on the highest non-qualifying finish in the regional championship meets.
The Division I NCAA Championship will be at Indiana State University on November 19 and the Division III NCAA Championship will be at St. Olaf College on November 17. Lehigh has qualified just one runner in school history for the national championship race. In 2005, the last time Lehigh hosted the regional meet, Jen Schappert finished the race in 20:44, finishing seventh overall and helping the Mountain Hawks to an eight place finish.
