Fourteen of the 30 conference nominees for the NCAA’s Woman of the Year award competed in track & field and/or cross country, including Wake Forest’s Michelle Sikes (Pictured), the Rhodes Scholar and NCAA Division I outdoor champion in the 5,000 meters.
Outdoor track & field had the most nominees of the various women’s sports with 12. Indoor track & field (10) and cross country (seven) also had more nominees than the next-closest sport, basketball (five nominees).
Now in its 17th year, the Woman of the Year award honors exceptional female student-athletes who excel in academics, athletics and community leadership. The nominees have completed their collegiate athletics eligibility. Many of the nominees competed in multiple sports.
A committee comprised of representatives from NCAA member schools and conferences selected the top 30 out of 128 conference and independent nominees. The 30 nominees earned an overall grade point average of 3.83, with seven posting a 4.0 GPA.
There are 10 conference winners from each of three NCAA divisions. A national winner will be selected by the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics from a group of nine finalists. The top nine finalists will be announced later this month, and the 2007 Woman of the Year will be announced October 27th in Indianapolis.
Last year’s national winner was Anne Bersagel, a cross country and track & field athlete from Wake Forest.
