Stanford #1 In 2007 Pre-Season Women’s Cross Country Rankings

Two-time defending NCAA champion Stanford opens the 2007 cross country season ranked first in the country among Division I women’s teams, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced today.
Stanford received nine of the 13 first-place votes in the initial poll. Michigan is ranked second. Third-ranked Colorado received the remaining four first-place votes.
Rounding out the top 10 are No. 4 Arkansas, Wisconsin, Illinois, Arizona State, Minnesota, Providence and Michigan State.
The second 10 consists of Virginia, Florida State, Georgia, Iowa, North Carolina State, Princeton, Duke, Colorado State, Washington and Virginia Tech.
Positions 21 through 30 are held by Georgetown, Baylor, BYU, Oregon, Texas Tech, Tennessee, Notre Dame, Boston College, Florida and Weber State.
The voting panel for the USTFCCCA Division I women’s poll consists of nine elected regional representatives, four at-large members of the USTFCCCA and compiled by Jesse Rosen.
Stanford won last year’s NCAA women’s championship with 195 points, finishing in front of Colorado (223) and Michigan (233). The Cardinal returns Arianna Lambie, the Pacific-10 Conference champion who finished fourth at last year’s nationals. Other key returnees are Lindsay Flacks, Alicia Follmar and Teresa McWalters.
Michigan opened its 2007 season by placing 12 runners in the top 17 at the Indiana Open. Nicole Edwards is the Wolverines’ top returnee, back for her junior season after finishing 12th at last year’s NCAA meet.
Colorado is led by Jenny Barringer, the second-place finisher at the 2006 NCAA Championships. Barringer won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2007 U.S. Outdoor Championships.
Sally Kipyego of 25th-ranked Texas Tech won last year’s NCAA individual title and was named the Division I Female Athlete of the Year by the USTFCCCA.
