With many of the same actors, the men’s 5000m of the IAAF World Athletics Final in Stuttgart, Germany seemed like a sequel to the 3000m run that was held the previous day. Edwin Cheruiyot Soi (KEN) the winner of the 7.5 lap race (winning time: 7:49.70), was also in the 12.5 lapper, as were Joseph Ebuya (KEN), Mohammed Farah (GBR), Craig Mottram (AUS), Thomas Pkemei Longosiwa (KEN) and Eliud Kipchoge (KEN). They must have been tired from the previous day’s race, because they ran the first 1000m in 2:57.99, a pedestrian 4:46 per mile pace, with Kenya’s Shadrack Kosgei taking the early pacing duties.
Ethiopian Sileshi Sihine then stepped up the pace a notch, going through 2000m in 5:46.66 (1000m split: 2:48.67, per-mile pace: 4:31). It was at least becoming a respectable race.
Masai Moses Ndiema (KEN) led the still-tightly-bunched field through 3000m in 8:34.11 (1000m split: 2:47.45, per-mile pace: 4:29). They were now on track to at least break 14 minutes.
Kenyan Kogo Micah then cranked up the pace another couple of notches, going through 4000m in 11:13.65 (1000m split: 2:39.54, per-mile pace: 4:17).
At the bell lap, the field broke into an all-out kick, bumping and jostling each other enough to worry about possible disqualifications. Soi proved that he was peaking, taking his second race in two days. The last 1000m was run in 2:24.51, an unbelievable 3:53 per-mile pace. Kenyan runners took the top five places and seven of the top ten places. Craig Mottram, having come off an recent hamstring tear, finished 9th in 13:42.81. Here are the final results:
1. Edwin Cheruiyot Soi (KEN ) 13:38.16
2. Micah Kogo (KEN ) 13:39.91
