WAF 2007Wallace Spearmon was the clear favorite going into the men’s 200m of the 5th IAAF World Athletics Final from Stuttgart, Germany. With a bronze medal from the Osaka world championships to his credit nd a couple of fast recent times of 19.88 (Brussels) and 19.82 (Berlin), the race was his for the taking, especially since gold medalist Tyson Gay and silver medalist Usain Bolt were not in the race. Rodney Martin, 4th in Osaka, was in the race, too.

Spearmon ran a relaxed race, perhaps too relaxed, because Jaysuma Saidy Ndure (NOR) – running the race of his life – was well ahead of him at the finish. Ndure, a Gambian native now running for Norway, broke his previous personal best by an improbable 0.36 seconds. Improvements of that magnitude tend to raise eyebrows, so it’ll be interesting to see what the post-race doping tests bring. Let’s hope that Ndure’s staggering, sudden, out-of-nowhere improvement is simply a result of hard work and natural talent. Here are the final results:

1. Jaysuma Saidy Ndure (NOR) 19.89
2. Wallace Spearmon (USA) 20.18
3. Rodney Martin (USA) 20.27
4. Johan Wissman (SWE) 20.30
5. Christopher Williams (JAM) 20.39
6. Joshua J. Johnson (USA) 20.48
7. Brian Dzingai (ZIM) 20.56
8. Paul Hession (IRL) 20.58
