Cont. Airlines 5th Ave Mile: Webb Wins Men’s Race

The men’s race of the Continental Airlines Fifth Avenue Mile, held on Saturday, September 29th, 2007 at 1:05 PM, showcased 2006 winner Kevin Sullivan and American-record holder Alan Webb.

The 1/4 mile split was 57.6. The runners were all bunched up. Juan Luis Barrios of Mexico was pushing the pace.

Chris Lukezic led at the half-mile mark in 1:59.1.

3/4 mile split was passed 2:55.7 Rankin was in front, followed by Lukezic, Sullivan and Barrios. Webb was fifth, but moving up quickly.

In the last 1/4 mile of the race, Australia’s Lachlan Chisholm made a move, but it was covered by Webb, who passed him to win in 3:52.7. Sullivan and John Rankin also passed him to finish 2nd and 3rd.

Webb, reflecting on what he has learned from Osaka and the last part of the 2007 season, said:

I really wanted to go into next year’s training with something positive… this was my first race in the U.S. and my first win in a while so it really meant a lot to me.

I need to learn to be confident even though things in the short term or right now are now are not going well… it’s easier said than done, but it’s something that I need to do and it’s something that I can do.
