Tyson Gay (USA) won his semi-final race with a time of 10.00. That sets up a showdown with Asafa Powell (JAM), who finished second in his semi-final race to Derrick Atkins (BAH) after virtually jogging to the finish in 10.08. Atkins finished in 10.04.
Gay is vying to dethrone Powell of his title of World’s Fastest Human. With world-leading times of 9.84 in the 100m and 19.62 in the 200m (the fastest 100m/200m combination in history), he is favored to win both events in Osaka.
Powell battled an injury early in the season, finally rounding into form on July 17th, 2007 at the Rome Grand Prix to post a time of 9.90. Powell is the world-record holder with a time of 9.77, a time he has run three times, first on June 14th, 2005 in Athens.
Gay’s season-best time, the 8th fastest of all time, is his PR, as is his season-best time in the 200m Dash.
