Day Three of the 11th IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Osaka, Japan will consist of five finals. There’s a final today to suit the taste of every track & field fan: one jump, one throw, one sprint, one middle-distance race and one long-distance race:

(all times Eastern Time)
6:30am: Hammer Throw, Men
7:20am: 3000m Steeplechase, Women
7:30am: Triple Jump, Men
7:40am: 10,000m Run, Men
8:20am: 100m Dash, Women

The women’s 100m Dash should be a showdown between Torri Edwards (USA) and Veronica Campbell (JAM). Although she hasn’t been at her best this season, don’t count out Lauren Williams (USA) in that race. Of course, they all still have to make it through the semi-finals, which they should all easily do, all of them having cruised through the heats and the quarter-finals with ease. The semi’s begin at 6:00am, Eastern Time. The women’s 3000m Steeplechase race is wide open, with a half-dozen women having run in the 9:29 to 9:32 range. Look for Kenenisa Bekele (ETH) to dominate the men’s 10,000.

Two other semi-finals to look out for are the Women’s 400m, in which all three Americans (Mary Wineberg, Natasha Hastings, DeeDee Trotter) are still alive, as well as the Men’s 1500m, in which Americans Alan Webb and Barnard Lagat are contenders. Webb has the fastest 1500m time (3:30.54) of 2007 and Lagat owns the third fastest 1500m mark (3:26.34) of all time.

In the Hammer Throw, look for a European sweep. Libor Charfreitag (SLV) has the only 80m+ (262′ 5 1/2″) throw from the qualification round. In the Triple Jump, Portugal’s Nelson Évora will be challenged by Brazilian Jadel Gregório and American Walter Davis. All three met or surpassed the automatic qualification distance of 17.10m (56′ 1 1/4″).
