Accustomed to winning, University of Wisconsin may be on the verge of losing Schumacher

The University of Wisconsin has long been reputed as a cross country powerhouse. Much of the Badger’s athletic distinction is owed to head coach and former All-American, Jerry Schumacher. Once a celebrated distance runner at UW, Schumacher’s now off-the-course contribution has garnered further successes for his alma mater. With five consecutive years of nationally acclaimed cross country and a 2005 NCAA title, the UW dynasty could now be in jeopardy of possible defeat: losing Schumacher.
Recently, the University of California has offered Schumacher the opportunity to replace Chris Huffins as director of the University’s track and cross country programs. A move to California, while not entirely devastating to a solid Wisconsin team, would nonetheless, negate the momentum Schumacher has brought to UW during his nine years as head coach.
While California’s athletic director, Sandy Barbour, has expressed public interest in acquiring Schumacher, other programs have allegedly approached the UW coach with undisclosed offers. Schumacher declines to reveal the identity of any institution that has pursued him confidentially; however, he has stated that the likelihood of his leaving Wisconsin is not great.
Regardless of his home, Schumacher’s accomplishments in distance running, both as an athlete and a coach, have proven him to be an indispensable asset to the sport. This summer, Schumacher will lend his NCAA experience to Olympic hopefuls. Among these athletes, Schumacher has the privilege of working with some familiar faces in UW alumni Chris Solinsky and Matt Tegenkamp.
Though Schumacher is extending his involvement in the running world to international competition, he maintains an unwavering commitment to his national-level coaching. With all of the uncertainty surrounding Schumacher’s future, as a former Badger himself and long-standing proponent of Wisconsin’s continual dominance in the NCAA, at least one thing is certain: weakening Schumacher’s allegiance to UW would require quite a bit of persuasion.
Wisconsin saw the beginning of Schumacher’s illustrious running career and anticipates several more years of success before his UW coaching career reaches an end.
