Team Running USA coach Terrence Mahon gave an extended interview to Charlie Mahler at the AT&T USA Outdoor Championships in Indianapolis last month which you may interest you.
Mahon, a former athlete, coaches Deena Kastor, Ryan Hall, Kate O’Neill, Jen Rhines (his wife) and Ian Dobson, amongst others. Here’s an excerpt:
Mahler: You seem to have a real steadiness about yourself. Hearing you talk about people’s success in context for where they’re at. Is that part of it?
Mahon: It’s a huge part! It’s the job of the athlete to think they can shoot for the moon. Right? And you don’t want an athlete that doesn’t think they can shoot for the moon, because if you’ve got to instill that in them, then they’re not where they need to be.
