Boston Marathon LogoThe Boston Athletic Association has finalized their results for the 2007 Boston Marathon. The 111th edition of the race had total of 23,869 entrants (14,344 male and 9,525 female), 20,646 starters (12,570 male and 8,076 female) and 20,338 finishers (12,364 male and 7,974). Given the rainy and windy weather, the 98.5% finisher rate is noteworthy.

Also, in the elite women’s race, the woman who crossed the finish line in seventh place, Lyubov Denisova of Russia, has been disqualfied for failing an out-of-competition doping test in March. Therefore, all athletes in the women’s results are elevated by one place. The restated results for open and USA Championship athletes are as follows:

1. Lidiya Grigoryeva (RUS) 2:29:18 $100,000
2. Jelena Prokopcuka (LAT) 2:29:58 40,000

*USA Championships prize money

Finally, Lisa Goldsmith, the 42 year-old athlete who finished fifth in the mixed-gender open women’s race in 2:59:38, was given a $5000 award as the second masters finisher, despite not running in the all-women’s elite race (prize money was restricted to women in that section). In a statement, the BAA said, “Lisa Goldsmith, who was the second place masters division female in the results by integrated official time, was also presented with a second place masters division prize money award ($5,000), although race policy clearly stated that to be eligible for prize money awards, female athletes needed to start among the separate Elite Women’s Start. Goldsmith started in the Boston Marathon’s Wave 1 (mixed gender). The decision was at the B.A.A.’s discretion.” So, both Goldsmith and Sheila Mason, 40, of Williamstown, Mass., were given the second place prize money.
