Most of us are accustomed to sugared sports drinks - Gatorade, Powerade, Cytomax, and others. Although the sugars provide glycogen (energy) that can aid us during long runs, for many athletes it is “too much” and leads to stomach cramping and/or crashes in energy.
Ultima Replenisher electrolyte drink offers an alternative to traditional sugar-bearing sports drinks, and if you’ve had bad experiences with Gatorade, Powerade, or Cytomax, you may want to check it out.
Here are a few of Ultima’s most appealing characteristics:
- 13 electrolytes and minerals (including sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium)
- Full array of vitamins
- 0g sugar
- Complex carbohydrate energy source
- Only 10 calories
- Vegan friendly - Gluten free
- No artificial flavors, colors, or sweeteners.
Despite lacking sugar, Ultima appears to be a pretty “sweet deal”, when compared directly to its competitors. And it consists of more than just electrolytes. I was happy to see Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, and more on the ingredient list. For full ingredient descriptions, click here.
In terms of taste, I found Ultima to be just “so-so“. Perhaps I’m just too accustomed to the sweet sugars of Gatorade and Powerade. But in any case, once Ultima goes down, it stays down (unlike some other drinks), as it has little aftertaste and does not cause stomach problems.
Ultima is a powdered sports drink, which means that it’s portable, flexible (you can make it as strong as you like), and convenient. In addition, since it contains no sugar, there is no sticky residue to clean out of water bottles and hydration pack bladders. Ultima can be purchased in various quantities and forms, with prices starting at $16 for a 30-serving canister.
