walter dix track and field florida state universityWalter Dix has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after winning three national titles, the 100 meters, 200m and 4×100m relay, over the weekend at the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif.

The 2005 NCAA 100m champion and 2006 NCAA Indoor and Outdoor 200m champion, Dix warmed up running the second leg of the winning 4×100m relay (38.60) and then stole the show in winning the men’s 100 meters in a world-leading 9.93 seconds, just .01 behind Ato Boldon’s NCAA record of 9.92. Dix finished out his third appearance in three years at the NCAA Championships by winning the men’s 200m in 20.32. Dix became the first athlete to win the 100m dash, 200m and 4×100 relay in the same NCAA Championships since John Carlos of San Jose State in 1969.

Other notable performances over the weekend were turned in at the 2007 Nike Prefontaine Classic at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., by 2007 USA Indoor 3,000m champion Matt Tegenkamp, who set an American Record in the men’s 2 mile race with his third-place finish in 8 minutes 7.07 seconds, which betters the previous American standard of 8:11.48 set in 2005 by Alan Webb. Nick Symmonds, the 2007 U.S Indoor 800m champion, won the men’s 800m in 1:44.54 in a star-studded field that included the reigning Olympic champion. For his effort, Symmonds was named the Team USA Athlete of the Meet presented by Visa. Visa will donate $2500 to assist Nick on his Road to Beijing.

Elsewhere, 13-time USATF Masters Athlete of the Year Phil Raschker crushed the W60 World Record in the heptathlon when she scored 6,865 points at the 2007 USA Masters Combined Events Championships in Hoover, Ala. The previous record of 5,876 was set in 2005 by Marianne Maier of Austria. En route to her victory in the heptathlon, Raschker also set world records in the W60 80m hurdles (13.50) and high jump (1.44 meters/4 feet 8.75 inches), the previous records were 13.78 by Maier and 1.41m/4-7.5 by Edith Graff of Belgium, respectively.

Now in its sixth year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
