LaShawn Merritt ran the fastest time of the season in his qualifying round and hoped to carry his momentum into today’s final. The field also featured Angelo Taylor, Darold Williamson, and Bershawn Jackson.
After a false start, Jackson and Taylor came out very strong. Down the homestretch, ti was a very even race with Merritt and Angelo Taylor battling it out to the finish. The finish, which was too close to call, showed on replays that Taylor dove passed Merritt for the victory and Lionel Larry, the young runner from USC, rounded out the top three (all of whom earned a spot for Osaka).
Taylor finished in 44.05, Merritt in 44.06 and Larry was close behind in 44.84 seconds.
