Earlier this month, 2004 Olympic bronze medalist Deena Kastor publicly revealed that her dermatologist had found both Basal Cell Carcinoma and early stage Melanoma in three distinct areas. Following her diagnosis, Kastor underwent surgery to remove the cancerous spots. She has been extremely open about the process, detailing the 25 external stitches and half a dozen internal stitches to tie off blood vessels necessary to remove the deeper cancer.
In her online journal, Kastor explains why she was so candid: “I share this because I feel I do my part in taking care of my skin.” Despite a diligent skin routine, which includes applying sunscreen before long runs, Kastor unfortunately still managed to develop skin cancer.
After a procedurally successful surgery, May 15th brought conclusive news of Kastor’s current victory against skin cancer. A much-anticipated call that evening reassured Kastor and her family that the doctors had been able to remove all of the cancerous tissue. With a clean bill of health, the American record holder is back on the track.
In her first 6 x 1K repeats in Mammoth Lakes, CA since the surgery, she reports that her times put her in solid position for training and upcoming competition. Pleased with her progress, Kastor is pursuing an aggressive summer schedule. She said that her plans include, “Running the 10,000 meters at [the] US Nationals at the end of June in order to make our National Team” after which she will compete in Osaka, Japan at the World Championships. A healthy Kastor also intends to enter several European races at distances of 3,000 and 5,000 meters throughout the course of the summer.
With a reputation as a “fast and fearless” runner, Kastor’s recent triumph over skin cancer suggests that this fearless attitude governs not only her running career, but also, her life. Her unyielding grit and tenacity has no doubt accelerated her recovery. The marathoner now hopes that her experience will convince others of the importance of skin protection, and reminds us all to schedule regular skin-checks and wear sunscreen.
