USA Track & Field named their team for the 5th IAAF World Youth Championships, scheduled for July 11 - 15 in Ostrava, Czech Republic.
Included in the roster of 16 boys and 15 girls is distance sensation, Jordan Hasay, the tiny sophomore from Arroyo Grande, Calif., who attends Mission College Prep in San Luis Obispo. She will compete in the 3000m. Hasay, the U.S. junior cross country champion at only age 15, ran an impressive 10:07.65 for two miles at the Arcadia Invitational last April, splitting the 3000m in 9:26.9. It will be interesting to see how she fares against the top youth athletes from other parts of the world.
In order for an athlete to compete in the IAAF World Youth Championships, he or she must be 15, 16 or 17 on the last day of the year. The world youth record for 3000m for girls is a stunning 8:36.45 by Ma Ningning of China set in Jinan in 1993. Last year’s world leading time was also by a Chinese athlete, Liu Yingzhu, who ran 8:52.64 in Yantai.
