Coaches, runners, and fans of training methodology take note: the knowledge of the man declared by Runners World as “Worlds Best Coach” and by NCAA as “Cross Country Coach of the Century” is now accessible through DVD. You can now gain insight into the mind of running guru Jack Daniels via the Jack Daniels - The Art and Science of Running DVD.
The DVD is composed of three main sections, each with several sub-topics:
- Daniels’ Principles of Training
- Training Load
- Limit Principle
- Specificity
- Law of Diminishing Returns
- Maintenance
- Jack’s 5 Ingredients of Success
- Ability
- Motivation
- Opportunity
- Direction
- Luck
- Intelligent Training Design
- Endurance Runs
- Marathon Pace Runs
- Threshold Workouts
- Interval Training
- Repetition Training
- Bonus Features
- Q&A with Dr. Daniels
- Jack’s Personal Coaching Stories
Personally, I’m a big fan of Daniels and The Running Formula, so I thoroughly enjoyed this DVD. The video consists of lectures Jack Daniels performed in a classroom setting, and covers many aspects of training principles and physiology. Much running lore is discussed as well, including the amazing training regimes of Jim Ryun and Gerry Lindgren. Some (but not all) material will be familiar to those who have devoured The Running Formula, and in fact the DVD is an ideal companion to Daniels’ well-known tome.
This DVD is particularly appropriate for coaches and runners who are interested beginning their exploration in training techniques and physiology. It would also be beneficial for high school and college coaches to introduce their young athletes to running principles through this DVD. The visual and audio nature of the video accomodates quick learning regardless of prior knowledge of the topic. Many may find the DVD easier to absorb than The Running Formula and other books on training.
The 90-minute Jack Daniels - The Art and Science of Running DVD is currently available from McMillan Running for $29.99.
