galen rupp oregon pac-10Episode 50 of The Final Sprint Podcast features my interview with Galen Rupp; the University of Oregon’s standout distance runner and one of the most exciting young athletes in America.

At the Cardinal Invitational on April 29th, Galen won the 10,000 meters in 27:33:48; the fastest time ever for a U.S. born collegian. In the process, he climbed to #7 on the all-time U.S. list, surpassing two-time Olympian Bob Kennedy.

Then, while leading the Ducks to yet another PAC-10 Championship, Galen became only

the second athlete to complete a PAC-10 Conference 5000m and 10,000m double in Oregon history, joining his coach Alberto Salazar who accomplished the feat in 1981.podtrac_survey_120x60_v2

In the interview Galen talks about these incredible performances, his plans for NCAA’s and the rest of the year, and the growing rivalry between himself and Chris Solinsky.

    Galen:

    A suggestion for you in the off season.

    30 day schedule:

    M- 4 lazy miles in the AM
    8 times 220 in about 26 seconds in the PM-no jog in between

    T- 4 lazy miles in the AM
    PM: 3 times 330 around 7/8 speed
    2 times 220 all out
    2 times 110 all out

    W - 6 lazy miles AM
    PM: 10 times 110 7/8 speed
    2 times 220 all out

    THUR - lazy mile in AM
    Lazy mile in PM

    FRI - rest

    Sat- ONE WORKOUT:

    2 mile warmup jog followed by
    1- 880 at 7/8 effort followed by walk 10 minutes, followed by all out 440-walkdown rest, followed by 220 all out, rest then 10 times 110 quick but relaxed 3/4 to 7/8 speed progression

    Sunday -rest

    Then repeat this for three more weeks then whatever you are used to
