Defending champions Patrick Makau and Peninah Arusei, both of Kenya, will be competing at Sunday’s 25 km von Berlin. It will be the 27th edition of what has become the world’s fastest 25 km road race.
Makau, 22, obviously likes running in Berlin. In winning the recent Vattenfall Berlin Half-Marathon, he lowered his personal best to 58:56. That converts to a finish time of 1:10:40 for 25 km, about two minutes faster than the ARRS world record of 1:12:45 set by Paul Kosgei in Berlin in 2004. Makau easily won the Würzburger Residenzlauf 10-K last Sunday, and looks to be in great form.
“It is my aim to break this record,” Makau told race organizers. “But we have to see how the race goes and how the weather is on Sunday.”
Like Makau, Arusei also won in Würzburg last Sunday, covering the 10 km course in 32:45. She won last year’s 25 km von Berlin in 1:26:25, but is looking to go faster this year.
“She has clearly improved at shorter distances this season,” said Christoph Kopp who organizes the elite athletes for this event. “Perhaps she can finally break our course record.”
That would be 1:24:29 set by Kenyan Susan Chepkemei in 1999.
