The prestige of winning an IAAF World Championships medal will be made even sweeter due to more than USD 7,000,000 in prize money which will be on offer at this year’s meet in Osaka, Aug. 25 through September 2, 2007.
In fact, athletes do not have to win a medal to make prize money. Prize money will be distributed as follows for all events (equal for men and women):
Individual:
1st USD 60,000; 2nd 30,000; 3rd 20,000; 4th 15,000; 5th 10,000; 6th 6,000; 7th 5,000; 8th 4,000.
Relays (per team):
1st USD 80,000; 2nd 40,000; 3rd 20,000; 4th 16,000; 5th 12,000; 6th 8,000; 7th 6,000; 8th 4,000.
In the marathons, there are additional prizes because the races also serve as the IAAF World Cup. Prize money is awarded by team based on combined time (score three athletes):
1st USD 20,000; 2nd 15,000; 3rd 12,000; 4th 10,000; 5th 8,000; 6th 6,000.
Finally, any athlete who surpasses a World record at the IAAF World Championships in Athletics will be awarded USD 100,000 donated by IAAF Partners Toyota (for Women) and TDK (for Men).
