One of New England’s great small-town races, the 14th annual New Balance Midnight Run 5-K, will take place one week later this year than its traditional date on the Friday of Memorial Day weekend.
According to race director, Wallie Jahn, the 2007 event will be held on Friday, June 1, in New Milford, Conn., at 8:00 p.m. This places the race one week ahead of the nearby Litchfield Hills Road Race in Litchfield which will be held on June 10.
Run on a flat out-and-back course , the New Balance Midnight Run 5-K offers a $4450 prize money purse (equal for men and women) with $1000 going to the race winners. There is also a $250 course record bonus for both men and women: 13:58 by Patrick Nthiwa, KEN, 2003 and 15:51 by Breeda Dennehy, IRL, 1998. Last year’s winners were Kenyan Julius Kiptoo in 14:08 and Irishwoman Marie Davenport in 15:53, just two seconds off Dennehy’s record.
“I was happy to run under 16 minutes,” said Davenport after last year’s race. “That’s a good blowout. I needed that race.”
