Susan Loken of Phoenix, Ariz., won her third consecutive title at the More Magazine Marathon here today, completing the hilly five-loop course in Central Park in two hours, 47 minutes and 52 seconds.
Loken, 43, the reigning U.S. masters marathon champion, dominated the race, which is limited to women 40 and over, leading from wire-to-wire.
“I think everybody’s here to share the same experience,” said Loken, a mother of three. “We’re all in the best shape of our lives and we’re over 40 and it’s a great event.”
Loken won $3,000 in prize money and time bonuses, plus a spa vacation at Canyon Ranch in Tucson, Ariz.
In the accompanying half-marathon relay, the team of Lyubov Denisova, 35, and Trina Painter, 40, got the victory with a combined time of two hours, 35 minutes and 59 seconds. Denisova, a Russian who lives in Gainesville, Fla., was the individual half-marathon winner in 1:16:49. Painter, who lives in Flagstaff, Ariz., ran 1:19:10, third overall. In order to enter the race, teams had to have at least one women who was over 40.
Denisova and Loken split a cash prize of $2,500, including a $500 time bonus for breaking 2:45:00.
The More Magazine Marathon and Half-Marathon Relay attracted almost 6300 entrants from 11 countries and 46 states. It was the fourth edition of the event.
