Women’s running pioneer, Kathrine Switzer, has completed her autobiograpy, “Marathon Woman”, to be published by Carroll & Graf in the spring.
“We will launch at the Boston Marathon starting on April 12,” Switzer wrote in an e-mail to friends last week.
Switzer became the first woman* to officially finish the Boston Marathon in 1967 in 4:20:02, after she entered the race as “K. V. Switzer.” Boston Athletic Association official Jock Semple tried to remove her number mid-race and was cut down by Switzer’s boyfriend.
A photo of that incident remains iconic in distance running. Switzer is now a writer, broadcaster and speaker who has also worked as a race organizer. Married to masters ace Roger Robinson, she divides her time between New Zealand and Upstate New York.
*Roberta “Bobbi” Gibb was the first female finisher in 1966, but she did not wear a number.
