After the race we had the opportunity to speak with Adam Goucher, who finished second in today’s U.S.A. XC Championships.
Goucher is the only U.S. man to have ever won both the 12km and 4km titles (when the Champs used to feature two separate races). He won titles in 1999, 2000 (both distances), 2000 and 2006.
When asked how he felt about his performance and coming in second to Alan Culpepper, Goucher said:
“If I was going to lose to someone I’m glad that it was to Alan who is my former teammate at CU. I’m not surprised that the top 4 finishers were CU runners. I expected that the outcome would be like it was. Alan ran the smartest race and that is why he ended up winning. I knew that Alan was coming up behind me strong on the third lap and he passed me with a lot of aggression.”
During the third lap Adam came to a water hole and ended up falling down. As a result, he fell behind by about 4 seconds. Goucher explains: “I ended up falling three times during the race which really slowed me down”.
With about 10,000 people cheering on the athletes, Goucher expressed his appreciation for the fans and all of their support:
“This was the most amazing cross country event I’ve ever seen in the US. There were people all along the course cheering all the
athletes on. This was a great fun event!”
